This year, Southam College Sixth Form students have chosen a variety of pathways beyond university. A strong number have secured employment, apprenticeships, or taking gap years before applications to University, demonstrating the Sixth Form’s commitment to supporting all post-18 destinations and ensuring that every student progresses to a meaningful next step. Overall, we support a broad and balanced range of post-18 destinations. Overall, students demonstrate ambition, adaptability, and readiness for diverse futures.

Several students have entered full-time employment across diverse industries, reflecting their readiness to transition directly into the workplace. We explain that employment pathways can provide valuable sector experience and financial independence. A selection of destinations include:

• Warwickshire Police – Law enforcement and public service
• Cummins Engineering – Manufacturing and mechanical roles
• Floor Management and hospitality leadership
• Pertemps Daventry – HR and recruitment sector
• Ridleys Coaches – Tour administration and logistics roles

In addition, a number of students are employed while preparing for future apprenticeships or reapplications, including the Fire Service, Army, and Formula 1 apprenticeships. 

A significant proportion of students have secured structured apprenticeship and training programmes. These cover a wide range of technical and professional areas, including:

These apprenticeships provide an excellent balance between academic learning and hands-on professional experience, showing valuable professional qualifications and reflect a growing trend toward work-based higher education alternatives. Our apprenticeships for this year are particularly strong in engineering.

A number of students have chosen to take a gap year before continuing to university or employment. Reasons include travel, gaining work experience, and personal development. Several students have deferred their university places to 2026, while others are using the year to strengthen applications or explore career options. We explain to students that gap years can reflect thoughtful planning and long-term educational strategy.
They can be positive and a strategic choice, offering students the opportunity to mature, gain real-world experience, and enter higher education or employment with confidence.
